There are proud people who do not know either God or themselves. They go forward according to their impressions: praise uplifts them; while an observation dejects them. They trust in themselves and scorn the advice of others. They do not feel the need to turn to God, who «has scattered the proud in their conceit» (ACV, p. 80).
