Poverty is the tendency to what is poorest, simplest. It is the detachment from those things that form the comfort, the well-being of the present life. It is a virtue that inclines the heart, the will towards the poorest. Note that there is the poverty of effect and poverty of affection. The first is that of those who do not have it; the second is that of those who have it but are detached (FSP46, p. 144).
