Pauline poverty has three functions: it renounces, it produces, it conserves; also it provides and builds up. Renounces administration, independent use, what is personal comfort, taste, preference. It produces with its assiduous work; it produces both to give to works and to persons. It conserves the things that it has in use. It provides for the needs that are in the Institute (UPS I, 447).
