Before everybody else the Child had called to himself the Shepherds because they were poor. The poor, in fact, were dearer to Jesus. If we observe poverty well, we are dear to Jesus like the Shepherds, and we also resemble Him more who wanted to be born poor and live and die similarly. The religious has everything that is used: like Jesus, who from the grotto to the sepulchre had nothing of his own (FSP46, p. 43).
