Sorrowful Mysteries

I. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus sweats blood and prays with humility, confidence, and perseverance. The angel comforts him. Let us ask for the spirit of prayer (see Mt 26:36–46; Mk 14:32–42; Lk 22:39–46).

Subjects for meditation:

Jesus in the Rosary: The patient Jesus.
Mary in the Rosary: The sorrows of Mary.
Fruit: God’s will.
Intention: For those struggling with temptation.
Words: “Jesus prayed a third time: Not my will, but yours be done.”
Eucharist: Reparation.
Pure love: Living lamps.

 

II. Tied to a pillar, Jesus is cruelly scourged in reparation for the many sins of humanity. Let us ask for the virtue of chastity (see Mt 27:26; Mk 15:15; Jn 19:1).

III. Jesus is crowned with thorns and mocked in atonement for many evil thoughts and sentiments. Let us ask for purity of mind and heart (see Mt 27:27–31; Mk 15:16–20; Lk 22:63–65).

Intention: For those who govern.

IV. Condemned to death, Jesus carries the heavy cross to Calvary. Let us contemplate our Savior’s patience and ask for patience in our sufferings (see Mt 11: 28–30; Mk 15:21–22; Lk 23:26–33; Jn 19:16–17).

V. Jesus is crucified, suffers for three hours, and dies to save us from hell. Let us ask the grace to love the holy Mass, which perpetuates the sacrifice of Calvary (see Mt 27:33–56; Mk 15:23–41; Lk 23:33–49; Jn 19:18–37).
