Priestly Prayer (Jn 17:1–26)

Jesus said these things, and then he lifted his eyes up to heaven and said,

“Father, the hour has come!

Glorify your Son so your Son may glorify you.

Just as you gave him authority over all flesh

so you may give eternal life to all those

you’ve given to him.

p. 86

Now this is eternal life, to know you—

the One, True, God—

and the one you sent, Jesus Christ.

I glorified you on earth by completing the work

you gave me to do,

and now you glorify me in your presence, Father,

with the glory I had with you before the world was.

I’ve made your name known to those men

you gave me from the world.

were yours and you gave them to me,

and they have kept your word.

Now they know that everything you’ve given me is from you,

because given them the words you gave me,

and they received them, and they truly know that I came from you,

and they believe that you sent me.

I’m praying for them; I’m praying, not for the world,

but for those you’ve given me,

because they’re yours and everything of mine

is yours and yours is mine, and I am glorified in them.

Yet I’m no longer in the world and they are in the world,

p. 87

and I’m coming to you.

Holy Father keep them in your name

which you’ve given me,

that they may be one as we are one.

When I was with them I kept them in your name,

which you gave me, and guarded them,

and none of them was lost except the son of perdition,

so that Scripture may be fulfilled.

But now I’m coming to you, and I’m speaking these things in the world

that they may have my joy fulfilled in them.

I’ve given them your word and the world has hated them

because they’re not of the world, just as I’m not of the world.

I don’t pray for you to take them out of the world,

but for you to preserve them from the Evil One.

They’re not of the world, just as I’m not of the world.

Make them holy in the truth; your word is truth.

Just as you sent me into the world,

I, too, have sent them into the world.

p. 88

And I consecrate myself for their sake

that they may be made holy in truth.

But I’m praying not only for them

but also for those who believe in me

through their word,

so that all may be one, just as you, Father,

are in me and I in you

so they, too, may be in us, so the world

may believe that you sent me.

And I’ve given them the glory you gave me,

so they may be one as we are one,

I in them and you in me, so they may be perfectly one,

so the world may know that you sent me

and you loved them just as you loved me.

Father, I desire that they, too, may be with me

where I am—those you gave to me—

so they may see my glory that you gave me,

because you loved me before the beginning of the world.

Righteous Father, the world also doesn’t know you,

but I know you and these know that you sent me,

and I made your name known to them

and I’ll make it known,

p. 89

that the love with which you have loved me

may be in them, and I in them.”

Glory…
